Weird number of messages on server

Maybe a gnus bug, i don't konw. By the way, when I try to subscribe a new
group from my server here it is what I get in th summary buffer:

     5843864: it.arti.cinema

I think that no group in the whole solar system has nearly 6 millions of
messages, moreover if I try to browse this groups gnus hangs up telling me
that it runs out of memory (no surprise) and suggests me to use 'M-x
save-some-buffer' command.

Any clue?

Catch up with it (`c') and then you can look at the last N articles
(say, 200) with

C-u 200 Enter

on the group.  Once you start seeing new messages from your
subscription date, this won't be necessary.  But if a group has no
unread messages (as will be the case when you catch up), Gnus will
again try to get everything in the group, so you need to limit it.

Well, I did as you suggested me but the result doesn't satisfy me yet. When
I finally enter in the summary buffer it's empty but the cached articles.

What's strange is that the problem regards only few groups.

Just because the NNTP server reports X articles "from the start of
time" essentially, doesn't mean that many are available.  Just catchup
to the present, and you'll be fine.

It's not so simple. I had already tried this, and that's what I get: I catch
up all the article in that groups, so the buffer tells me that there are zero
unread articles, then when I try to enter that group Gnus reads from the nntp
server the number of articles present and again returns me that huge amount.

I sometimes see something similar - see my report at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=393546

I find that removing all mention of the afflicted groups from Gnus'
files, then resubscribing, etc. fixes the problem when it happens.

I hope that works.  I've never seen this bug.  If you can replicate it
reliably, turn on the NNTP log, and try to submit a bug  You may need
to send us your newsrc.eld and other bits.

Cool. FWIW there's an NNTP log snip in that bug (it doesn't seem to
include the server's actual responses, just what was sent) and my
.gnus.el was as in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=355071

It's not happening at the moment, but if it happens again I'll gather a
copy of the newsrc.eld and let you guys know.

The only really irritating bug right now is

Great, thanks Mark.  If you don't hear from a Gnus developer in a few
days, remind me and I'll follow up on the ding mailing list.

Unfortunately I don't use the Agent personally, and was not involved
at all in the code for it, so I can't suggest anything.  As with the
other bug, let me know if you haven't heard about it from a Gnus
developer.

Generally Gnus bugs should be submitted with M-x gnus-bug instead of
through Debian for the fastest response.  I am on the ding mailing
list, and I don't remember anything from the Debian people in years
(but I may have missed it).  We do get reports from Emacs, though,
since Gnus is included in Emacs.

Right.  Sorry, I forgot to mention the command.  So yes, turn the log
on, then do (setq gnus-verbose 10).  Duplicate the bug in the fewest
possible steps, then run M-x gnus-bug and include the NNTP log, your
.newsrc.eld file, and your gnus.el file.  The contents of the
*Messages* buffer will have useful information as well; I forget if
they are included in gnus-bug automatically but I think so.  If there
is information in any of those files that you don't want to share with
a public list, you can e-mail me directly and I'll censor them, or you
can edit a copy yourself before you send the e-mail.

I realize this is not a quick job.  Unfortunately it could involve
several pieces of functionality, so we should have a good picture of
your setup.

...which is hidden by default, so you will have to do

C-x b *nntp-log*

More than that. I forget how deeply I had to excise things, but
certainly .newsrc.eld and possibly into the actual groups themselves.
(Was a while ago now, I'm afraid.)

Moreover, if I browse the active file of my news server throught the server
buffer, the entry of that groups shows the correct number of messages.
This is strange indeed.

I have the same experience.

For me, it's the comp.compilers group.

Gnus says it has 10651 articles. The news server says:

  Me:                  group comp.compilers
  news.lysator.liu.se: 211 411 8841 9514 comp.compilers

which I get to 673.

I tried to kill the group and subscribe again, but that didn't help. 

I tried to find all mentions of the group in .newsrc.eld and other
files and remove them. Then I restarted Emacs and Gnus, but that
didn't help. 

I did what Ted asked about M-x gnus-bug RET and included *Messages*,
my .newsrc.eld, the nntp-log and various other things.

Any ideas?
