Regular online meet-up

Hi all,

already for a while I wanted to suggest a regular online meet-up, just to chat or discuss ConTeXt and the world.

Participants of the just finished meeting already know the BigBlueButton “room”, and without the difficulty of a auditory in presence and a weak DHCP, we should have even less problems with it.

I’d offer this monthly, 2–3 hours, and let’s see if it stands the test.

Now, if you’d like to participate, which times would fit you (weekdays, daytime...)?

We’re using the facilities of the German charity “Computerwerk Darmstadt 
e.V.”; the’re very privacy-aware, their free “senfcall.de“ service is 
based on BigBlueButton (https://bigbluebutton.org).
Since I got an account, we can use the same “room” all the time:

There’s no prepared subject/talk/presentation (from my side – feel free to share something).
But I guess we will discuss PDF viewers some more...

This is meant to be regular, i.e. every second Tuesday of a month. Next time is November 11th.
Let’s see how this works out; maybe we need a different day/time.
If we become many, it might make sense to offer something regional or language specific...


[Howto]
* No special software installation required; most modern browsers should work (WebRTC required).
* Open the above URL, accept the privacy statement, 
* enter your name (or anything you want to be known as), 
* click "join" (or "start" if you’re the first),
* click "with microphone", allow your browser to access it, check the audio.
(Some strings might be different, I see the German interface, you should get the main language of your browser.)
* Your microphone is muted if you join. Activate microphone and/or camera with the buttons at the bottom.
* Minimize the default presentation with the "screen" button, bottom right.

* If you’d like to share your screen or upload a file, you can make yourself the presenter: Click on your user name, change the setting, then you’ll see the "screen sharing" button beside the camera button; also there’s now "manage presentations" behind the "plus" button. Beware there is only one presenter, so don’t kill someone else’s presentation.

[Technical hints]
* Sound is usually better if you use a headset (less noise for everyone).

* Connection problems are mostly due to low bandwidth or high latency on your side, e.g. with mobile connections.
* If audio/video doesn’t work for you, you can still use the text chat.
* Screen sharing needs a lot of bandwidth.

* You can also join with a regular telephone (audio only, of course), call +49-6151-86275-22 (German landline); then you must enter a PIN that changes every time – if you need it, ask me for it via email. Mute/unmute your microphone with "0".

[Netiquette]
* Mute your microphone while you’re not talking.
* It’s nice to show your face at least when you join.
* If there are connection problems, stop camera sharing.
* The room is set to “everyone’s a moderator“, I trust you...

From my part:

I will show off the novel that I’m sending to the printshop tomorrow. Typeset with extreme HZ...
A first run of these 332 pages needed just 33s on my old Mac – ConTeXt LMTX is fast! (In comparison: a first latexmk run of my short DTK article about the ConTeXt meeting, using the DTK LaTeX class, needed more than a minute. My ConTeXt book though, now at 298 pages and using *all* the features, needs ~8 min for a first run.)

Also, I’m playing with different SyncTeX parsers for a LaTeX project, maybe there’s something to show/discuss next week. (SyncTeX *is* convenient with bigger projects! Using MuPDF lib, it should even be possible to combine SyncTeX information with PDF annotations to get corrections from PDF into ConTeXt sources...)

Last time I was at the ConTeXt conference, a few years back, there was talk about "monetization" of ConTeXt.  In other words, using ConTeXt to generate revenue.  I was wondering if this is still on the agenda.  Perhaps we could have a discussion on how to achieve this.  I have one possible idea but I would need some feedback from the more experienced members to ascertain its viability.

For sure. As were the moments between meetings, the location, and 
cuisine. It is as much a 'meeting friends' event as a 'talking tex, mp 
and lua' opportunity. A lot packed in a week. And thanks to Jano (last 
year) and Taco (this year) covid could not prevent it happening, 
although of course for some it did (which is why we experimented again 
with limited online).

I suppose it has to be some best fit for all, so you can best check with 
those on line last week to get the best time.

Concerning 'topics' ... it if also involved discussing features, solving 
problems, demos than we need to mechanism to collect those so that they 
can be prepared.

Hi,

I think a regular online meetup would be great, and I agree with Hans that some way to collect topics would be nice. Re Time: I'd prefer Mo-Thursday during regular working hours (Central European Time), but maybe that should be offered at different times to accomodate for different needs?

senfcall.de is a free service by a privacy-aware German charity, based on BigBlueButton (also open source).
BBB is generally better than Jitsi Meet.
My (free) account allows me to use the same address for the “room” every time (and a few other things).

But feel free to offer something else.

Hi List,

I will attempt to join the online meet-up today. I'm in Fort Collins, Colorado, so you might notice some lag in my interactions. (And if I’m still in my pajamas, I have a good excuse.) I’d like to meet some other members of the ConTeXt community.

If there is time in the discussion, I’d love to hear some about what \mathboxanchored and friends are doing behind the scenes.  I am using it for angular momentum diagrams in formulas, as shown in the attachment below. I’ve written my own replacement for \connectboxanchors to get some of the connections, but for diagrams involving more than two symbols, it’s getting a little crazy. If I understood more about how the system works, I think I could integrate MetaPost code more elegantly to do the drawing.
