It seems imake is not welcome at all, so here is another suggestion how
to configure rc:

What about writing header files including os dependend defines? One will
have to link the correct os header to say os.h before compiling.
Changes to Makefile will be reduced to installation parameters.

For those cases where no suitable header is provided, there should be a
summary of defines somewhere. New headers should be collected somewhere.

ps: AIX compilers define "_AIX".
