[TUHS] Chaosnet for 4.1BSD

Hello,

For your information (and to reduce my guilt for posting off topic
sometimes), I have 4.1BSD running with Chaosnet patches from MIT.  I'm
adding a Unibus CH11 network interface to SIMH.  It's not working fully
yet, but it's close.

Sure, at least it's both historical and Unix.

The CH11 device is for all SIMH Unibus computers, so VAX, PDP-11, and
PDP-10 (KS1).  There supposedly were patches for PDP-11 Unix too, but I
haven't seen them so far.

Why oh why is there such a high correlation between archaic obsolete
systems and sheer hacking joy?  I'm just dying to have MagicSix on
Chaosnet, but it's not to be.

I'm not doing that hacking, too old and burnt out, but for those who
still have some juice left my guess is it is fun because the older
systems were pretty simple.  A kernel and a few well known device
drivers is not a lot of code (the millions of lines of Linux kernel
code is almost all drivers).

I think it has something to do with wanting to verses needing to (for 
one reason or another).

I've always found it easier to help someone else solve their problem 
than it is to solve the same problem for myself.  I attributed that to 
the desire vs need.  Maybe the attribution should be more to the company 
than the singularity.

When everyone was reading iron man, spider man, x-men I was the weirdo reading “What if?”

Sure tcpip scales, but it wasn’t the first, nor the last..  Much like many of these old systems, owning one is far from practical, let alone a functioning one, but emulation is so convenient.

Just as dynamips is another great hero of emulation, bringing all kinds of networking topologies into play.

I guess it's also a break from the x86_64/arm64 boring of the day to day.

It's working now.  I have also tested MINITS running on the pdp11
simulator.  MINITS is a Chaosnet gateway, router, terminal concentrator,
graphical display, printer server, etc.

At one point there existed Chaosnet patches for PDP-11 Unix V7, but so
far I haven't found them.

They sound interesting... hopefully the resurface. The hackmem describes
all the changes needed, but it's a poor substitute for the code.
