Excerpt from the BSD 4.3 sh(1) manual page:

     set [-eknptuvx [arg ...]]

     ....

     -v Print shell input lines as they are read.
     -x Print commands and their arguments as they are exe-
        cuted.
     -  Turn off the -x and -v options.
