Hi:

I tried to install plan9 on my Dell inspiron 8200 laptop. When booting
everything seems to go fine except:

South bridge 8086, 248C not found

rio starts but the display shows lots of thin lines mixed up with
everything else. I know that the wiki page of PC hardware says the
geforce chipset isnt supported but maybe the problem can be solved
easily (at least the display shows someting).

Appart from that, the pointer doesnt move from the top left side of the
installation program window.

Thanks in advance:

Alfonso Acosta

PS: heres my plan9.ini file

You're right. I redirected that echo's standard error to /dev/null.

You're right. I commented out the nosddma etc. lines, which I'd forgotten
about.

This I don't understand.

I doubt that the vesa/non-vesa is related. Probably it's some
non-deterministic bug and you just didn't trip over it the second time.

Right again. Fixed.

Thanks.

update: i took the good disk from the bad machine and put it in the
good machine with the bad disk.

andrey

ps: two things worth mentioning: i had optimistically set the vga
resolution to 1600x1200 which didn't work for this particular nvidia
card. it worked when i toned it down to 1280x1024.

the latest pcf config file has 'realmode' defined in the 'misc'
section. this prevents it from being started at boot time and aux/vga
complains that there's no /dev/realmode during its vesa initialization
routine. i moved it to the 'link' section. i see that the newer pc*
config files on sources have it at the right place, so i guess i was
just unfortunate to burn my cd in the brief period where the kernels
were borken.

I got a fossil-only standalone system (PC with Intel 865G chipset)
running successfully with Nov 13 ISO.

1) While installing from CD, after "init: starting /bin/rc" message, I got

echo: write error: bad process or channel control request

twice. I guess this is because of 'echo rwm on' to CDROM's /dev/sd*/ctl in
/sys/lib/dist/pc/sub/termrc.

2) When the installation prompts for 'use DMA for ide drives[yes]:', answering
"no" doesn't turn off DMA. Looks like /sys/lib/dist/pc/sub/termrc/termrc:22
turns on DMA well before this prompt.

3) copydist failed in the same way described by Andrey.

> cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
> cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
> cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
> cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
> cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 3e9d4a9b
> replica/applylog: appending to db: block label mismatch

I had monitor set to vesa at this point. When I retried the
installation with monitor set to xga, copydist was successful (with a
few 'entire cache is busy; cache is okay again' messages).

When I tried Plan 9 installation a few months back (July), I had
display problems with the official ISO. plan9vesa.iso worked (with
monitor set to xga; I didn't try monitor=vesa then).

4) fmtfossil gives the following error messages, but the installation
is not affected.

> Reformat /dev/sdC0/fossil (yes, no)[no]: yes
> test: unknown operator memory
> test: unknown operator memory
> test: unknown operator memory
> Done.

Probably, /sys/lib/dist/pc/inst/fmtfossil:61 should be changed to
		n=`{cat /dev/swap | grep user | sed 's/^[0-9]+\/([0-9]+) .*/\1/'}
in line with recent change (on 2005/10/31) to /sys/src/9/port/devcons.c:893

[I am new to Plan 9. Hope I didn't misinterpret any of the
installation messages.]

Thanks,
Arvindh

managed to install cleanly after doing a 'dd -if /dev/zero -of
/dev/sdC0/data' to the disk. however i'm still seeing interesting
issues:

- 9pcf doesn't initialize the display properly, the cd boot does
- keyboard works only sporadically, well it works roughly one time out
of 10 at the 'root is from' prompt with both 9pccd and 9pcf kernels.
the interesting thing here is that it works fine during the install or
even at the plan9 startup menu

at this point i still don't have a working plan 9 installation so
forgive me for not being able to debug properly :(

Actually this happens to me too but not when I use the floppy install. It
appears to be related to the CD driver.

I reported this sometime this summer I recall, along with another person.

People suggested that perhaps DMA being on or off was a issue on the CD
drive but my motherboard didn't have DMA support until about a month or two
ago when Russ added it to sources.

i don't think so -- it booted other operating systems fine beforehand
and went through the venti formatting step just fine. i saw one extra
error now when i tried it again:

Reformat /dev/sdC0/fossil (yes, no)[no]: yes
test: unknown operator memory
test: unknown operator memory
test: unknown operator memory
Done.

more install problems for me on another box:

copydist fails after a few 'entire cache is busy; cache is okay again' with:

cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 50dd4ff
cacheLocalData: addr=229 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 3e9d4a9b
replica/applylog: appending to db: block label mismatch

afterwards every attempt to copydist fails with:

cacheLocalData: addr=226 type got 0 exp 0: tag got 0 exp 5abcafcd
cmp: cmp 23095: read error

Hi!

Yes, I did. I didn't have any problems.

But it was some time ago.

The latest ISO image ( from 11 november 2005 ) I used only for updating.
And I didn't have any problems too.

i have a machine i'm trying to install fossil-only here, but i can't
get as far as booting the fossil-only system post-install. the install
goes well but somehow the partition table never gets updated. MBR
can't find 9fat and booting from the cd after such an install shows
only /dev/sdC0/data and no partitions.

Did anyone install the ISO successfully using
fossil only configuration, ie without venti?

When I tried, fossil complained with "unable to
connect to venti" errors at mountfs.

I don't suppose you a free primary partition on the disk? That
might be the problem, or at least part of it.

I am having trouble trying to install Plan9 rel.3 on my laptop.
It's a TI Extensa 565, 75MHz Pentium with 40M ram and a free
500MB area on the disk (the first 250MB belongs to MS-DOS.)

My install disk is from the 12 Apr 01 disk image. Here's what
happens:

Insert disk and power on.
PBS works ok
apm is found -- is this the power management Bios ?
loader find fd0!dos!plan9.ini
dev A0 1F0 is found -- must be the IDE disk ctlr
9PCFLOP.GZ is found and unzipped (many dots followed by sizes
looks like the old text+data+bss stuff)
loader finds cpu0, #y0 (an i82365SL), and dev A0 again and says:
5830 free pages
23320K bytes
114520K swap
root is from offers local!/bzroot as the default - I take it.
next comes kfs...boot: nop... and then
                                                Different errors
bunzip2: decompress failed sometimes
kfs: premature eof reading /386/bin/ip/ppp <----
boot fatal: read nop: file does not exist
panic: boot process died: unknown but always this
ktrace /kernel/path 801064e2 80007ce4 <---- address
[a hex dump follows this -- and finally...]
cpu0: exiting

And the machine freezes.

I have rebuilt the diskette several times and tried it in other
systems and get either some version of a rio screen, or at least
an rc % prompt.

Possible problem may be that my Bios shadows the system ROM to
F605-FFFF, and there is no way to disable shadowing in the Bios
setup. Am I just outta luck?

I have a working Plan9 system on a desktop machine (built from
an earlier version of 9disk.9fd) if that could help me debug
things; but the laptop has no network card.

I'd appreciate any ideas you may have on how to get the install
working.

Thanks,
