Our auth server boots off a small 9fat disk partition and then
gets root from the fileserver.

are most of you running your auth servers stand alone(kfs)
or are you booting them from floppy and getting system files
via a file server?

I run a CPU server and a separate file server running 2nd edition,
and a CPU server and a separate file server running 3rd.
Each edition is running it's own AS but I've only got a half dozen
accounts and I'm the only user of the 2nd edition file systems.
I can mount the old bootes from 3rd edition since my password
is the same on both systems!

In article <Pine.BSF.4.33.0108210904540.65851-100000@lucifer.ducksworth.com> you write:

I run my cpu/auth server off of my file server, booting both off
of a floppy. In those devices where I can, I use 9fat partitions
on IDE devices (sometimes disc, sometimes a flash device) instead
of floppies, but those devices are relatively few. That's
somewhat unfortunate, since floppies boot so slowly and have a
tendency to die over time (I suppose all things do, but floppies
have a particularly short lifespan).

If I had my banks, I'd make the file server and CPU server boot
off of flash devices and everything else boot over the network.
Unfortunately, I am poor. :-)

by the way, if I use rio in such a setting (I know that I'm not
supposed to run rio on a cpu server), ^p reboots the machine

what's the trick?

I'm planning to change, but presently my auth server is still
2nd edition and whereas it boots off a hard drive, it uses the
file server as soon as it can.

The plan is to make the CPU server stand-alone and also the
serial console for fileservers and other rack-based (not
-mounted, sigh!) hosts. In fact, I'm hoping to charge it with
shutting down and starting up the managed equipment in the
event of power outages. Could be a long time coming,
naturally.
