Sorry, I've just been skimming the discussion, but I remember trying to
hook my digital camera up to my Think pad last summer and the pain that
caused.  At the time, I thought a good idea might be able to have a
/dev/sdloop (loopback device) that could speak the SCSI protocol to things
that opened it.  I never looked further at it than that.  It sounds like
what some of you guys are talking about with augmenting /dev/sdctl might
be similar.
