Ahhh, it seems my decompression went awry. All I got
was a single 2mb text file containing the source
files, and a bunch of garbage. Searching this file for
README finds it way at the bottom. So something went
wrong detarring/preserving directory hierarchy. This
explains a lot.

As to where 3) went, it seems I need a book on
counting first! I think it was caused by my trying to
use letters in a primarily number based scheme (1a).
Ok, I'll give something with these files a shot, can't
hurt now. (maybe someone can send me a binary sparc
kernel?)

As to books, english is a germanic language after all!
But I was asking more along the lines of general books
that might give me some background I feel I'm
obviously missing. Or maybe just more playtime is
needed.
thanks
-dave

/sys/doc/release3.ms says you're right. I could have sworn 3e was
released the day after I left the Labs, which would have made it 1
April 2001. I guess that was some interim release.

My apologies; I could have sworn it was 1995. Perhaps there was an
earlier edition. In any case, it can't be describing any version of
the system newer than second edition, since 3e didn't appear until
spring of 2001.

1) as its README says:
---
This directory contains an approximation to the the
sources included in the 1995, Release 2 edition of
Plan 9, pertinent to the construction of Sun SLC,
Sparcstation 2, and Sparcstation 10 kernels. It also
includes some related files that may help the porter,
including similar vintage ports for the PC and Gnot.
Although it includes relevant C header files,
it does not include the sources for the libraries.
---

It looks like it's a gzipped tar file.

1a) Some of us have 2e source, but it's covered by the
more-restrictive 2e licence, and you can't those licences any more.

2) Probably; it's just 9P (and the new Styx is supposed to be quite
close to 9P2000).

4) [sic] `Three, sir!' It will take some work to update a 2e sparc
kernel to 4e. Just running a 2e kernel might work; I don't think 9P1
changed enough after 2e to matter, as long as you don't need 9P2000
for anything.

There is only one Plan 9 book, from 1995, and it's in German. You can
get it from amazon.de if you really want it. I was told by a famous
publisher that there is no market for a Plan 9 book.

Alright, fellas. Time for more dumb questions(and dumb
answers?) from me. I want a plan 9 network(cpu/auth,
fs, term) i have 3 computers. That's where the easy
part stops. Currently I like plan 9 as it runs on my
ibm t20 laptop, but I don't have enough space for
venti. The other computers are a Sparcstation 10 and a
ps2 with the linux kit. Therefore:
1) What exactly is the Sun sources on extra
software.(all the neccessary kernel source files
concatenated? what's the garbage between each file?)
1a) Does anybody have a copy of the full 2ed, or
what's the quickest way to get something resembling
plan 9 on the sparc.
2) Can inferno serve venti? that is, how am i to best
use the ps2(with its 40gb hdd).
4) should i give up and install openbsd/linux on
everything, leave the list and be perfectly(?) happy
using second-grade os's.

Ok, that said, what books should I read to stop
bothering all of you/if you help me out now, I may be
able to contribute something in the future. maybe.
Once again, thanks.
-dave
