Verisad (sic) are just a disaster. i have always tried
avoiding them (as much as possible) and doing things
myself (if possible). they have a tiresome habit of
breaking stuff.

i saw some other DNS weirdness as of yesterday. it may
not be DNS related (i have side info), but it is very strange.

iirc they are a root CA -- what a foul quasi-monopoly.

You mean, removing their root server from the root cache and declaring
the cache static, as it has certainly become?

If the other root servers are not as stupid, we may be able to defeat
their grand plans.

You may have noticed that Verisign has decided to return 69.94.110.11 as the IP for any .com or .net DNS lookup that would otherwise have returned "host not found"

How to people feel about ndb coding round this ?

Oops, no, we need to ignore their .COM and .NET nameservers, hoping
that their madness hasn't infected anyone else.

It is a business model. They return that IP which with a web browser takes you to a verisign web page offering web searches domain registrations.

It's a real swine.

I have a script that checks submitted email addresses for existing domains, no domain and you can't register in a bid to hopefully catch typos (you should see the number of ways poeple can type hotmail).

Now my check always succeeds and I'm back to square one.

I'm going to check the returned IP but I expect them to change it regularly to defeat such workarounds

Tain't good enough. The whois database is very flakey. I've been using it for
plan 9's country check and once you leave arin, you start getting some very odd
stuff. Like the netherlands claiming the whole address space, bad redirections from
arin to the other db's, ...

Some network carriers have installed null routes for that IP address, so
one of your upstream networks could be sending the packets into the black
