This is not the kind of system that comes with instructions.
I started fumbling around something like this:
term% tar xvzf alef.tgz
term% cd sys/src
term% ls
term% cd alef
term% ls
term% mk all

and you can see it goes wrong. Welcome to Adventure!

I'd also check lucio's contrib which some stuff in
/n/sources/contrib/lucio/sys and
some .tgz which includes binaries in /n/sources/contrib/lucio/alef.tgz

You have to copy the discrib on top of a plan 9 one,
then configure it. In fact, I'm not sure, but there might be a full
distribution on our web page.
There are detailed manual pages (and I think there were more
detailed instructions on this list time ago). See intro and booting, IIRC.

If this is not enough feel free to ask and I'll try to help.

If you want a working version of the Alef compiler, try
/n/sources/contrib/lucio/alef.tgz. It compiles and some tests are
successful. However, useful libraries such as graphics, are
conspicuous by not having been ported to the architecture of 3rd
Edition Plan 9. It's on my TODO list to sort this out, but the
priority is low.

If you need specific help, though, I'm willing to assist. Like Bell
Labs, I think the usefulness of Alef is limited, but I also believe
its historical value is high.

If you're a big enough badass,
http://csplan9.rit.edu/users/john/planb.txt or
/n/sources/contrib/john/planb.txt may help you. I wasn't quite badass
enough, so while I got Plan B installed (ish) I never really got
anything done with it.

I'm pretty sure Plan B is deprecated in favor of Octopus these days
anyway.

Sure. We are retiring the planb system still in place.
Only some itx in the corridor are still using it.
All our terminals are either Plan 9 native (some running
octopus PCs) or octopus terminals.

But in any case, if anyone still wants to try plan b for any
purpose I'll try to help.
