As you may know from the thread back in August, we've been running 9fans on
a self-hosted Mailman on a VM instance, with a spam blocking service in
front.

I've been working with Calvin Morrison of Fastmail on moving 9fans over to
Fastmail's hosted mailing list service, Topicbox.

The list address remains 9fans@9fans.net.
Searchable archives will be hosted at 9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans.

I think everything is ready to cut over, and I plan to try after sending
this message. All addresses that were receiving mail from the old system
should start receiving mail from Topicbox automatically, and we've
preserved the "digest or not" bit as well. To manage your subscription, log
in to topicbox at 9fans.topicbox.com.

If all goes well, this will be the last message sent through the old system.
I will follow up with a message through the Topicbox system after the
cutover.

Best,
Russ

This mail should come through Topicbox. We will see. :-)

By all appearances, 9fans mail is flowing through Topicbox now.

The 9fans archives <https://9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans> now hosted at
Topicbox contain all the messages
formerly at 9fans.net/archive (before that machine went down), dating
all the way back to July 1993. For fun, here's my first mail to 9fans
<https://9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans/T907e5dc9acc6a37b-M018d8428a7afa869ae454cdd/vt100>
.

Thanks very much to Calvin Morrison and the Topicbox team for their help!
I'm quite excited to have 9fans running on a properly maintained system
after all this time.

Best,
Russ

i know i'm late to the party, but shouldn't 9fans be running on a 9
machine/cluster?

i received a lot of html here.

in addition to the original html sent by the authors there is now even
more html stuff, e.g. those footers:
 9fans / 9fans / see discussions + participants + delivery options
Permalink

there's also a plaintext version of this, adding 5 lines to every
email. all this seems quite redundent if you ask me.

personally i don't think it matters what software is used to host it
as long as it works reliably. since i registered on 9fans, russ did a
very good job with mail, thanks a lot for that - i only still miss
those web services you had on your website, russ! :))

This is missing the dozen or so messages from the beginning of the
mailing list in April 1993. I have them in mbox format if you are
interested in adding them to your archive.

And it's all in duplicated in the headers.
Can it be turned off?

Also, the following messages in the Topicbox archive are duplicates.
They are identical except for an empty "Cc" header on the first one.

https://9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans/Td304f708de7d8d92-M42f72ee9d5148680750dc274/9fans-attention-new-list-address
https://9fans.topicbox.com/groups/9fans/Td304f708de7d8d92-Mc7db8bc68d73a0e7bf287d33/9fans-attention-new-list-address

This was the first message after the switch from psu.edu to 9fans.net.

Just checking edge cases. ☺

There's no html in your mail, at least.

As for the footer, I'm sure I'll be glad to have the permalink in every email, and it's not in the headers.

I'm not commenting on the size of the headers though. :)

btw. even though i dislike the links in the content of the message i
like the idea of this header to make the mail accessible in a global
namespace. and wondering if this is the case on any other mailing
lists or only a topicbox-internal standard...

Ah, then there's a deficiency in both the standard and my mail client. I see this in the headers:

Archived-At: =?UTF-8?B?PGh0dHBzOi8vOWZhbnMudG9waWNib3guY29tL2dyb3Vwcy85?=
 =?UTF-8?B?ZmFucy9UNzNhNzM4OGE3MTZlMzY0NC1NM2I5MjYyMGQzNzhiYTIwNTA2NGNh?=
 =?UTF-8?B?MDg0Pg==?=

Quite right. RFC2369 describes most of the standard headers you'll be used to. However, I'm not aware of a permalink to web archives for each individual post.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2369

Does 9fans-request@9fans.net still work for subscription? Can someone
update https://9p.io/wiki/plan9/mailing_lists/ since that's the first
result of a web search.

Archived-At is from RFC 5064.

	https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5064

The weird "=?UTF-8?B?" is an "Encoded Word", per RFC 2047. Email headers are defined to be 7-bit ASCII (yes, still); 2047 provides a way to encode other characters in email headers. Mind you, it looks like all the actual Archived-At links Topicbox would fit in 7-bit ASCII anyway and it'd be nice if they reserved the Encoded Word for when they needed it, but whatever; email is a mess and this is nice to have.

I got a note stating this will stay true indefinitely.

In Topicbox' defense their marketing line is "Group email for teams",
so saying it is not a very good mailing list package wouldn't be fair.

It does not; not at the moment.

I complained about it and the issue has been brought to Topicbox
team's attention.
