Well, just to bring this issue to conclusion, I want to report that I
finally bit the bullet and switched to debian.  I then ran the command
above (or something very similar, actually), and the problem I mentioned
indeed went away.

And now that I'm debian-ized, I'm finding it a to be lot easier to keep
my system in a self-consistent state.  I heartily recommend this to
other non-debian linux users.
