Just noticed, that ``<#secure method=pgp mode=sign>'' is broken for koi8-r.

I send an ASCII message, signing it with RFC1991-style PGP. Everything
works. But when I use Russian words, it breaks somewhere. Seems, that it
tries to use both QP and base64-encodings -- and that's the problem.

Attached is the message, signed with method=pgp in just updated from CVS
Gnus, containing only one Cyrillic word: ``тест'' (transliteration for
``test''). Note, that I didn't forward it from Gnus, but copied it
directly from my mailbox.

Yeah, I've tried this with both pgg and gpg.el -- it's reproduceable
here in both cases.

I'm rewriting my .gnus setup and moving my email to a new server.  I
have complete control over the server, so I'm considering a whole new
workflow.

To make my gnus portable, I'm putting my .gnus file on a crypto fs on
a portable USB drive.  All downloaded mail also goes on the crypto
drive.  I'll carry around the drive, and whatever host I'm using emacs
on, I'll point emacs at the .gnus file to read mail.  I have three
classes of mail:

0.  all mail ported from the old system will get archived in an nnmail
    hierarchy on the crypto drive.  The archive will be read-only.

1.  all incoming personal mail gets downloaded from various POP
    servers to their respective Maildirs, which are on the portable
    crypto drive.  When I run gnus, nnmail-split-fancy will split and
    archive this mail on the drive.

2.  all incoming mailing list mail stays in IMAP on server.  When I
    run gnus, nnimap-split-fancy will split this mail on the server.
    The purpose of this is to reduce bandwidth and time during mail
    download.

My gnus groups buffer will show me all groups from these three
classes.

My main concern is, since I'm moving from having fetchmail always
running on a single host, downloading in the background, to gnus
synchronously doing the downloading whenever I run "M-x gnus", am I
going to be frustrated by the download times?  I'm especially worried
about IMAP splitting taking a long time. Is there any way to make it
asynchronous?

Nice idea! I'm worried about losing the drive, though. Not so much about
the data that will be in somebody else's hands, but about the mails
which will be lost. I hope you have a good backup strategy. (-:

Hm, I have thought of doing something similar (but without the cyrpto
drive). Now I use gmane.org, which does the same things, but is
generally easier to use, needs no splitting, and a "subscribe" or
"unsubscribe" is a "u" away in the group buffer.

If that's not good enough, you could use procmail splitting rules,
which are also faster than nnimap-split-fancy.

asynchronous is an interesting idea. You could run a slave gnus which
reads only the first two classes of mails in a separate emacs (or even
all three, if you use gmane (-:).

You could use Sieve or procmail for server-side splitting on the IMAP
server.

gmane.emacs.gnus.general AFAIK. You can also read the ding list from
news.gnus.org, there it's called gnus.ding.

Supporting MIME and non-MIME aware OpenPGP at the same time is tricky.
I installed the following, which is based on the assumption that users
don't want to clear-sign non-textual material.

The non-MIME aware OpenPGP support in Gnus should be revisited
somewhat IMHO, right it works for textual data (unless there are more
problems similar to this one), but it would be nice to support more.
I.e., attaching files and marking that part with "sign=pgp" should
encode it as a normal, non-clearsigned, OpenPGP message with the MIME
headers left unchanged (this would make it interoperate with various
Outlook plugins).
