Freeze up on general news scan (g)

For some time now I've been having a problem where when I do a general
news scan (g) It doesn't ever finish.  It doesn't always happen and
has been a bit of problem getting a backtrace but finally got one
posted below.   

I pulled out all the byte code, replacing it with [...] but was not
sure if I should leave all the message processing, its quite a lot but
seemed like it should probably stay.

Yes, the stall at news scanning has disappeard.. Thanks.

Ooops, may have spoke too soon.  This morning when I first pressed `g'
I got the stall again.  It ends up on the nndraft server then never
finishes. 

But trying again ten minutes later... it works as expected.  I'll try
to get a back trace later on.

I realize this is an old old thread... but I'm still having the
problem and have had all this time.  I've gotten so used to working
around it that I kind of quit fussing with it... until, lately when I
posted about it again and got some help from Katsumi, that seemed at
first to fix things:  It was some old code I had kicking around that
was from way back with this post I'm responding to, was current.

to having huge (never ending) waits when pressing 'g'.  All nnml:
nnimap: etc gets refreshed , the last being nnfolder... but when it
hits the part where it nntp refresh...happens, it just never finishes.

I doubt it is a server problem since any single newsgroup or any nntp
server refreshes in a normal amount of time... I run in topics so if I
hit M-g on all gmane groups, good refresh time.  Ditto for newsguy.com
and apn (forte-agent news service)

It only the over all 'g' refresh that goes into infinity.

If you do get a chance to respond to this message, I wonder how you
would track down what is happening during that infinite wait.

Watching the nntp-log buffer... doesn't show much... It seems to stop
at newsguy, but like I said I can refresh all newsguy groups with M-g
in a normal time frame.

How to make gnus show me what it is doing, or where to look for that?

A "me too" might not be that helpful, but... me too. Any time I resume
the computer or re-connect to a network I'm in the habit of opening a
single nntp group, to prod the connection into life, then hitting 'g'.

Lars asked about this on the emacs-devel mailing list with no good
solution.  We just don't know if the remote is down.  I think it
requires some reworking of the Emacs process code to make detection of
hung or stale connections easier, and to build keepalives into the base
level.  But I don't think Lars ever set a course of action.

Until we have some resolution, use the following sequence (it can
probably be written in Lisp but I haven't bothered):

`^' = Server buffer
`M-c' = close all server
`q' = leave the Server buffer

Now `g' will open new connections for all servers.

Thanks for this, at least it's good to know the state of affairs. It
looks an elisp version of that sequence would be very simple: just call
`gnus-server-close-all-servers', and then `gnus'.

It would be nice to add that to `gnus' as a user option (maybe a boolean
`gnus-always-reopen-connections').  I worry, however, that adding it
implicitly says we don't plan to solve the problem.

I wish I could be of more use, but network connectivity is foreign
territory to me. Where would you propose to add this reopen hook? How
would emacs/gnus know that, for instance, the computer had just resumed
from hibernation?

I think that the proposition is to do this "unconditionally". So, when
you resume your laptop, you type `M-x gnus` and you get the connections
reopened.

As to detect lose of connectivity, I think this is quite hard. If
depending on D-Bus is OK, Gnus could listen to Network Manager's state
(`StateChange` or `StateChanged`)

Something from the peanut gallery... but also OP on this thread with
continuing interest.

Is there something similar to a keep-alive signal used elsewhere in
networking that could apply to nntp servers.

OH, and just reporting here that closing servers first, then 'g' is a
work-around that has also solved the problem for me.  Thanks.

And thanks to whoever posted the original suggestion... before Ted and
Eric gave more handy ways to do it.

Right.  The better way is to do it conditionally but it seems like a
hard problem.

Yup, but NM is hardly universal and too many other things can break the
connection.  Lars had a big thread about it on emacs-devel.  I refresh
rarely so I wouldn't mind always reopening, but it does seem like giving
up on an interesting problem :)
