Oort t-shirt, pass three

[Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen]

I'm weeding X-Faces for the back of the shirt.  So far, I've just
been removing the obvious things -- copyrighted images, illegible
stuff, and obvious duplicates.

The resulting X-Faces are at:

This is about 100 images too many, so about one third of them will
go.  And I'll decide on a basis of whim.

But right now I need your help.  If there's any images that you don't
think should be included, please post their numbers.  Candidates are
1) duplicates, 2) the same poster with many different images -- there
should preferably only be one image per person, and 3) other stuff.

Post the numbers to be removed here, and I'll weed them away.

After a couple more passes, I'll post images of the actual shirt
design, and you can comment on that as well.

Just a question, how does an X-Face render finally ? I've seen my
picture but I find it "ugly". 

If I make a new X-Face, would you mind to update my current one with it
?

Are these scaled up? They are on my screen. In Emacs X-Faces are about
15mm high here, on the web-page they are ~2mm larger. More than 10%:))

The ones that are very gray-scale will probably not survive wery
well, so I'll probably be weeding a few of those...

What's about xface->png->pdf using pdf*tex?
The pdf*texies understand png graphics natively.

The X-Faces are 48x48 pixels large.  If I have a 300dpi (or 600dpi)
printer, how do I calculate how to make things be an even multiple of
each other?  In LaTeX?  :-)

Well, whaddayouknow.  If I don't give any width parameter in epsfig
at all, it prints beautifully, with no moire effects at all.  All the
pixels in the faces are nice and square, and will print on the
t-shirts quite nicely, I think.

However, this makes the design slightly too large to print on A4.
:-/

Hm...  the printing shop actually uses (almost) A3 screens, so if I
had an A3 printer, they could screen directly from that page without
doing any enlarging/reduction at all.  And I could put more faces on
the page, I think, without them becoming just a wash of grey.

That'd be a possibility.  :-)  I didn't want to complificate stuff
for the printer...

Anyway, it almost fits on an A4 page if I fiddle with the format a
bit.  The legend underneath will be on a separate page...

The 1215 shouldn't be used (imo), because it comes from a German
techno band's logo called « Dune » It's old, but we never know.
Could you use this one instead.

The X-Face block is so rectangular that I thought I'd rectangularize
the rest of the elements as well.

But now I have to redo the design, since I'm going with

I just duplicated a few to have as place holders.  There'll be no
duplicates (on the front, at least :-) in the finished design.

What I've now got is a narrow line of faces going over the chest --
it'll be about 2cm high.  Underneath it, aligned right is the text
"It's big.  It's far out.".

But I've so far been unable to place the Oort logo anywhere...

I really enjoy your front design, especially the Oort Logo that rocks !

I think  that, I  miss the  old-fashion Gnus' logo  :-(.  It  is quite
nice, it  would be  sad not  to use it.  I've made  a 3  seconds image
sample for testing.

If you're going with black-on-white, one possibility to consider is
swapping the (black) galaxy and the OORT graphic (in the old design).

Make the OORT graphic big and centered and put a small galaxy in the
corner somewhere. This way it won't look like a spiralling black hole
but a small ink smudge. :)

The old-fashioned logo is on the back of the shirt...  anyway, since
the shirt is not black-on-white, the whole spirally galaxy thing is
out.

I hate to be the one to say this but I think this Ort logo looks a bit
too phallic. 

I'd really hate for a batch full of these shirts to go out and hear a
bunch of "It's big, huh..." jokes to be made :)
