Gnus in CVS now decodes morse encoded messages if you press `W m'.

It's funny seeing it with diacriticals. :-)

One looks at the text and see some accented letters :-)

Do you use XEmacs? If so, you need the "misc-games" package. I
updated the XEmacs package requirements section in the manual, thanks.

Hmm, it only says "Symbol's function definition is void:
unmorse-region" to me on xemacs 21.4.9.

Does it help to install the "misc-games" XEmacs package for morse.el
(and rot13.el, and maybe other things too)?

Loading morse is also needed.

I think the functions should be autoloaded, as they are in Emacs.
I'll send a patch, thanks.

Unfortunately, unmorse-region is not autoloaded in Emacs 20 as well.

Ouch. Ok, the code now only proceeds if it can require morse.

Thanks. But the byte-compiler still complains about it. Why
don't we add the autoload for that function to Gnus? :)

Great! The quotient of coolness and usefulness reaches a new maximum
;-)

For german users the following snippet might be helpful to de/encode
umlauts:

,----
| (require 'morse)
| ;; capital letters are converted to downcase
| (add-to-list 'morse-code '("ä" . ".-/."))
| (add-to-list 'morse-code '("ö" . "---/."))

| (add-to-list 'morse-code '("ß" . ".../..."))

Should Gnus really exclude this case? It seems like doing too much
work, there are two cases; one where "-- " was intended as a morse
character, and it will be translated; one where "-- " was the
signature separator, in which case it is translated into 'm' so it
adds some garbage. The signature separator is not the only sitation,
all ASCII art will be garbage. IMHO morse decoding should morse
decode everything that even remotely looks like morse and let the user
filter out the noise.

Hi Mark,

    > Kewl. Thanks.

On several web pages i found that german umlauts don't need to be
transcribed as two character sequences, there are already unique
translations to morse code:

(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\ä" . ".-.-"))
(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\ö" . "---."))
(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\ü" . "..--"))
;; transcribe to "ss"
(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\ß" . ".../..."))

As you see i escape the characters now, otherwise e.g. "ü" is
interpreted as "\xf7c".

Best regards,
cu, -cc-

This is true, but it should be incorporated in morse.el, so everybody
is able to de-/encode it.

As you can see it now works perfectly out of the box. And, indeed,
rot-13 is obsolete, now ...

Norwegian:

(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\æ" . ".-.-"))
(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\ø" . "---."))
(add-to-list 'morse-code '("\å" . ".--.-"))

æ and ø clashes with ä and ö, but those are pronounced more or less
the same so it doesn't matter that much. unmorse-region doesn't seem
to mind, either, it just translates to the last defined.

morse.el in Emacs CVS HEAD should have these and some other now.

Hi Martin,

    > æ and ø clashes with ä and ö

From my other posting:

    > As you see i escape the characters now, otherwise e.g. "ü" is

I presume that this extended character code has something to do with
unicode? Mule? To have only one byte for encoding different chars
(meaning of the byte) results in those clashes, IMHO.

No, the Morse-codes of æ and ä resp. ø and ö are the same.
