* Emacs 21.1 switch broke reading of html mail (w3 problem?)

Hi all,

although I presume this is not exactly a gnus problem, I think it
might still be useful to know/solve in this context.

I just switched to Emacs 21.1 (which is a beauty, btw) and now I get
the error message

  "Cannot open load file: w3-21"

and I only see the header of the mail. Installing a freshly downloaded
version of w3 and putting that in the site-lisp path didn't help.

I'm pretty sure this is a w3 problem, but I'm asking myself whether it
isn't possible for gnus to shed the dependency on a package like w3?

Regards,
Georg

I tried patches given but had still had enough W3 problems to keep it
worthless. Things like an invalid arguments of keymapp.

However when I build URL and W3 from the CVS (from cvs.gnu.org)
things worked very nicely. The tar file on www.xemacs.com seem way
out of date.

I only needed to set the custom varable w3-user-colors-take-precedence
to "t" to get avoid a lot of color dissonance against my dark
background emacs setup. Emacs 21 doesn't seem to have a way to set a
window specific background color for W3 to use.

I just release 4.0.47 that should fix this problem for the old codebase.
I need to send an announcement out, will try to do that today.

Until recently there was some major brokenness in the CVS - most of it has
been fixed in the last week or so, but be warned. :)

Yesterday the 47pre tar archive file lacked the lisp files ;) I'll try
the next hours again.

ran out of diskspace on /tmp/ so the package was screwed. :( It is fixed
now though.

Can happen. This afternoon (CET) url-util.el was still missing.
Additionally I'm wondering whether you'll continue to pack url and w3
together into one distribution archive file?

For 4.0.x, they will continue to be in the same distribution, it would be
too big of a pain in the #%!@ to change that. The new stuff, when it is
ready for general release, will be packaged separately so that people who
just want URL loading can have it, etc.

Emacs/W3 is likely to be split apart even more into a series of parsers
and DOM components, that something like Gnus could use to do web-based
backends without all the HTML rendering code (necessarily).

Ummm... url-util isn't supposed to be in the old distribution. That is
just in the head CVS.
