I know :-)
Actually, it does indeed prompt me for the password, but when invoked
with w3-fetch. The problem I have is with the picons network retreival in
Gnus. It hangs and never retreive anything. Without any former queries to w3,
I was expecting to be asked for the proxy password by gnus (or w3) for the
first picons retreival, but nothing happens. Any idea ?

Could you set debug-on-quit and see where it is hanging when you interrupt
the picons stuff?

Hmmm, it would be hard, because it's done asynchronously. But after
further investigation, it seems that the problem is elsewhere: my sysadmin
filters out some sites known to send ads images, and the picons site seems to
be one of them :-( It's replaced by a random local image and thus the proxy
services are not required.
What gave me the impression that the retreival was hanging is that
Andy's progress gauge never goes away...
