I see nothing wrong in improving the error checking in selected
parts of the code. Mistakes do happen and this time the type was
correct when I set it. it was a lisp function symbol, but
it wasn't fbound (I forgot to add autoload) so the Gnus went
ahead to used it as shell command. Yes, It was my mistake,
but it would have been good to test stringp/error before doing
expand-file-name. That would have been more informative error.
