Hi,

I've just tried the VESA ISO from 9grid.de on my old Pentium 3 laptop. 
VESA works fine, great work! :) However, after copydist is finished the 
installation won't proceed but instead offers copydist again. A short 
time before that (at the end of the first copydist) I also got a couple 
of errors about non existant files such as /n/newfs/386/9pxeload.

Again, great work with the VESA support. Will that go into the 
"official" iso (haven't tried, so it might already be there).

It will once some bugs I introduced into the non-VESA code
get fixed.

That was because of some files were not accessible when mirroring sources,
like /n/sources/plan9/adm/keys. They are now there and the CDs are rebuilt
Thanks for using 9grid.de!

Copydist is offered again, because there were errors.  Everything in the
installation has to work, or it won´t proceed further.

Hi,

I am getting the below error while installing plan9, during the [bootsetup] phase

cp: error writing /n/9fat/9load: IOerror
cp: can't create /n/9fat/9pcf: '/n/9fat/9pcf' clone failed
/n/9fat/plan.ini: rc (bootsetup): can't open: '/n'9fat/plan9.ini' clone failed

Please help resolve this.

Your spelling mistake, or the distribution's?  I'm talking about the
quote in place of a slash.

the source is here:  /sys/lib/dist/pc/inst/bootsetup.
clone failed means the file server went away, so this isn't
a case of a missing file.

op:  try "echo dma on>/dev/sdC0/ctl".  before copying.
you can open another window in the installer by the
normal methods and type anything.

I tried "echo dma on > /dev/sdC0/ctl" in a new terminal, but I am getting the same error during bootsetup.

"cat /dev/sdC0/ctl"  prints

These CD images already enable DMA by default in the
ATA driver, so this step shouldn't be necessary.

You could try 9atom, as suggested by Erik, since he
uses different ATA and AHCI drivers.

What disk controller are you using? Does it support AHCI?
If so, have you tried to switch it to AHCI mode?

The 9legacy CD images also includes the AHCI driver
in the CD installer, in case your controller is supported.

Hi,

I was able to boot plan9 by changing my bios setting "ATA/IDE Mode" from Native to Legacy.

I am downloading 9atom now and will give it a try.

I'm a having a small problem with my installation, and I was wondering
if anybody out there could help.

It's a pretty old system (relativly speaking, of course) and that may be
the problem.

16 Megs of ram (this may be the problem, I don't know how much ram is
needed)

The floppy boots ok until I get to the "root is" prompt, at which I hit
enter and then I get the following :

root is from (local)[local!/bzroot]: <enter>
kfs...boot: nop...no physical memory
no physical memory
no physical memory
.....

Yada yada yada.  This goes on forever. (well, until I restart it at
least)

Any ideas?  I'd be happy to provide any information needed.

The very first paragraph says you need 32Meg to run the install.

try ed(1). i believe that's even there on most Unixes, no?
once graphics are running, acme and sam are a bit more
friendly, but ed works just fine.

oh, and there _is_ vi(1). man vi for details.

This is what I met yesterday. :-)
I added a line in the section of "ctlr=virge linear=1" in /lib/vgadb,
	0xC0045="S3 86C375/86C385 Video BIOS. Version 2.01.07_508"	#Virge DX

Of course, the line can be different from mine for you.
I hope this may help you, the first person from Italy (am I wrong?)

[9fans] Installation problem

I tried to install Plan9 rel. 3 on one of my computer, but It 
stopped with an error (unable to load rio, if I remember correctly).
It seems that it was unable to identify my gfx card (S3 86C375/86C385 =>
Virge Dx/Gx).
The installation process blocked just through the loading of the boot disk.

Wasn't that card supported?

My exact hw configuration is: 

K6@233 32 Mb ram
Via MVP3 
Samsung 8.4Gb ATA33
3Com PCI 905B 10/100 Ethernet
keyboard at & ps/2 mouse

I believe the Virge Dx/Gx chipsets are supported. It is probably
just a matter of adding the appropriate identification string
to the installation disk's vgadb. A dump of your video bios should
have been written to file vgainfo.txt on the installation disk. Check
this file for the correct string to add to vgadb.

uhmmm.... i've just read the pages that you've advised to me, but
i've some problems =P

i come from the unix world, and i feel a bit disoriented in the
plan9 (rc) shell:

1) you tell me to edit the file /lib/vgadb, but there aren't vi(ARGH!!!!), 
ex, elvis, joe, etcetc which editor can i use in the command line?

2) i was unable to find the dump (vgainfo.txt) of aux/vga, which is the exact
location of this file (PATH)? 

3) there aren't any 'more' or 'less' command...
so, how can i see the contents of a crowded directory?
for example, when i issue 'ls' in /bin, the list of files fill the screen, 
scrolling out the firt entries, preventing me to see it, and this is very
annoying..... =P
i hope you understand me =)


and now, tell me if i'm correct:

1) i boot the system 

2) i edit /lib/vgadb and add my video card (i've to add something like "86c375"
in some place in that file, i'll play a bit wiht it =)

3) reboot&cross the fingers =)

if all is ok, now i should be able to start a fresh installation...wowow!!! =)

The installation disk is dos formatted - the text files (plan9.ini,
vgadb)
can viewed/edited on any machine with dos file support.

It is normally written to the installation disk just prior to
starting rio, as part of the normal installation process.
If it is not on the installation disk, then the install died earlier
than implied by your original post.

Do you wind up with a shell prompt (%)?
If so, then you should be able to try the following commands:
% a:			(mounts the floppy on /n/a:)
% ls /n/a:
to list the contents of the installation disk.

Are you referring to the machine on which you are trying to
install Plan 9? The install disk contains nly a minimal set
of commands  The Plan 9 equivalent of 'more' or 'less'
is the command 'p' but I  don't think it is included on the
install system. Command 'lc' will give a columnized list of
directory contents, but again, it isn't available until after
installation is finished.

OK (rio fails to start and you are left at a shell prompt.)

This is basically it, but the file to edit is vgadb located on the
installation disk. It will be easier to edit this file on another
machine.

The entry to be added is something like Kenji Okamoto's post:
   0xC0045="S3 86C375/86C385 Video BIOS. Version 2.01.07_508"     
#Virge DX

The exact address and string is determined by examining the video
bios dump (either on screen or in file vgainfo.txt freshly written
to the installation disk).
