Lucent had little to do with Inferno externally
after 1 September 1999, and nothing to do with
it externally (technically) after 1 March 2000, so there was
no reason for Lucent to keep that external domain name.
Internally Inferno continued in use in Lucent in
several projects (both products and research),
but even control of the trademarks had been transferred.

I've no idea why the current owners of that domain name bother
to keep it registered. Perhaps there's a little back story there;
I don't know.

Likely Google juice, there are still plenty of high-rank links
pointing there lying around the net.

That and probably the amount of mistaken ad clicks are enough to cover
their registration fees, so why would they let it go?

It might be worth trying to get control back, I think you can do that
for domain squatters that violate trademarks, as is clearly the case
here.

I think that's only if the trademark owner pursues it, and the US may
have other draconian clauses to the effect of "use it or lose it", at
least I know there's a statute of limitations on some things about
trademark infringement. Worth a look, though, if someone cares.
