Not really. I think the first step would be to update
gnus-group-customize and all the code that uses to-list and to-address
parameters. (to-list and to-address should still be used when
mail-address is not set, I guess.) Then your MFT patch could be
similarly adapted, but wouldn't necessarily have to fall back to
to-list/to-address.
