I'm curious: what do you mean by blank disk check?

I'm taking the words right out of the installation utility. There
is a check just before partdisk that evidently scans the hard disk
for its mbr. If there is no mbr it prompts the user to install a
new mbr assuming that the disk is completely blank. Since my disk's
first few blocks were completely mangled in a crash the installation
utility assumed the mbr didn't exist. Yay for me cuz now the disk
works again.

Everything is cool now. All three laptops boot fine with or
without hard disks. Thanks! Thanks, also, to whom ever hacked
a blank disk check into the installation utility. That was an
easy fix for my hdd that crashed trying out a 9fs system.

i'm curious to see what their apm lines say
at boot time, just to see what interesting bits
of code were being incremented on those machines.
the new disk should fix them. let me know if it doesn't.

I don't take offence. If it was me I'd want
to ask the same questions when researching a
bug. Its only proper :)

As a side note all three of these machines had no
trouble booting 3e and the Compaq was actually my
most stable 3e terminal.

In the partition dump I sent this bit was informational not an error (so it
would seem from a brief google search that I did, see
http://www.ata-atapi.com/hiwchs.htm ). I do have an older dump which does
report errors when I tried to install on a partition which was to small
(included below). I suspect some error may be tracked from that info. My
skimming of that site seems to indicate that calculations of C/H/S are not
as standard as one would hope, and the safe way might be to use the bios
call (a thought from the hip based on a 5 minute skim).

Richard W.

Did Partition Magic actually say that these values were wrong?
The cylinder number was 1023 because that's the largest one
you can write. It is the "large drive placeholder" which
really means "there's no C/H/S-expressible address; use the
LBA". Unless they have found somewhere to put two more bits
of C. Sigh. I wish this were documented _somewhere_.

Russ,

So I did get 4th edition running on my target PC. In my case I just let
Plan9 have the rest of the disk, instead of having another partition behind
it. I did run a utility on the disk which reports that the Cylinder value
used presumably calculated and set from Plan9 was wrong. My tool said that
the number of cylinders should be 2481, while the value written in was 1023.
I haven't looked into the code to see if this was the problem or not, but I
suspect it could contribute if I really tried to use an adjacent partition.
I've included the disk information below.

Regards,

Richard W.

how many such laptops do you have?
what kind of laptops?

i would like very much to find a way

that i can touch, and while i don't doubt

whether it is as general as you make it sound.

If someone can give me information about what exactly
is going wrong, I would love to fix this. I suspect that
our LBA counts are fine and the imaginary C/H/S addresses
for partitions past what C/H/S can address somehow aren't
kosher.

To avoid that problem the second time I re-installed _everything_
(win98, linux, freebsd, & plan9) on my quadruple boot machine, when
installing linux and using fdisk, I created a plan 9 partition ( type
0x39 if memory serves me right, don't rely on it until the number's
been confirmed). This partition was not formated, of course, linux
can't mkfs a plan 9 fs, but space was allocated - correctly sized.
Plan 9 installation had no problem using this partition.

Hope this helps,
Joel

I got this same exception when trying to use 4th edition on my Dell Optiplex
GX300 (NTFS is on its first primary partition). I originally used Partition
Magic to set up a FAT partition to put the install image in (as the 4th
edition didn't seem to be able to look into the NTFS partition). After
adding a FAT partition and the install image, I got the "panic:
exception/interrupt 14" error. When I removed this partition and put the
distribution on a CD I was able to go through the Entire install
procedure....Unfortunately, when it boots and I try an log in as a user it
now just streams the error message "wrenwrite failed: io/error".

On a side note the Plan9 partition utility seemed to corrupt the partition
directly behind it. I also ran into a similar error with the 3rd edition
where it calculated the size wrong by 1 or something. Looks like I may have
to dedicate a whole machine to make it go.

Regards,

Richard W.
