On gnu.emacs.help there is hardly any traffic nowadays, on
gnu.emacs.devel there is some but not a lot. Usenet has been
pretty useless for ages now with very low traffic, the
substantial part of it being even lower.

So my question is, do you really need elaborate scoring
schemes for that small volume of messages?

But from a tech perspective I get it, obviously one like
things to work and when they don't, one likes to find out why.

Scoring (in gnus) is not just for "newsgroups", it works very well for
email.  I get several hundred emails a day and scoring (adaptive and
pre-defined) is indispensable in handling the volume.

Even in newsgroups such as emacs-devel there are (were) one or two posters
who I thought to be pointlessly aggressive, bordering on abusive. They
were easily blocked using scoring.

In my case, if I get really annoyed, I'll set a permanent very low score
for the individual.  However, generally, I stop reading posts by such
people and eventually the adaptive scoring leads to those posts being
marked as to be ignored, i.e. automatically marked as read.

Of course, if really really annoying, I can simply add the person to my
kill file which works very well in gnus.  But that is an extreme case.

Yeah, and you can use scoring to do that as well, I think it
is more practical.

I did that to spam senders a couple of times, but I haven't
got any spam in a long time now. So either it is working, or
spammers are loosing their edge a little bit?

Yes, I expect it to work the same way for all groups, however
the OP had just 2 low/moderate traffic MLs (as Gmane groups)
and 7 Usenet newsgroups.

Several hundred emails every day? Yikes! And you grep the
subject line for "Eric!!!" to find out which ones to read?

So there are no .ADAPT files in that list.  That seems to indicate that
adaptive scoring is not enabled (which, of course, is what you believe
already).

I cannot think of anything else to look at, having considered especially
gnus-use-adaptive-scoring already.  Sorry.

I have gnus-use-adaptive-scoring set to '(word line).  Try that to see
if it has any impact?

I am using adaptive scoring. In the gnus-summary buffer, I see that
gnus-use-scoring is set to t, and gnus-use-adaptive-scoring is also set
to t. Also, the value of gnus-default-adaptive-score-alist is

Yet, when I go read or catchup or kill, that does not seem to affect the
score that I have displayed in the summary buffer. I existed gnus and
opened it again with no change. Looks like it is not turned on, but
given the documentation, it should be turned on.

Any help debugging this issue is appreciated.
