Gnus status

Hi, I've been a happy user of Gnus 5.8.8 for a while and am
considering moving up to a newer version, but I'm wondering what your
thoughts are on using the latest it as a primary mail client.  Do you
consider it ready for "real" use, or does it still at the stage where
it "occationally rains down death and destruction on innocent
bystanders"?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm having trouble
finding anything that really sums up the current state.

For what it's worth, I've used Gnus as my primary email client for
about 3 years now.  In that period, I've used nnfolder, nnml, and
nnimap extensively, all without any loss of mail.  If you are used to
the Gnus way (treat mail and news in a uniform manner), there's no
reason to not move to 5.10.x.

Yes, but these is a problem with marking unread messages as read.
And the sad story is, we don't know how to reproduce this problem.

Work around: From time to time enter your groups with C-u RET.

I'm using Gnus 5.10.2 as my primary mail client, and was using Oort
development releases before that.  I've not had any problems.

Thanks for your feedback, and also to Nevin.

I've updated to 5.10.2 and so far it has been drop-in compatible with
the old version.  I haven't made any changes to my .gnus file but it
all seems to be working just the same (though I haven't tried
newsgroups yet, just mail.)  I'm not used to updates being so easy.
:)

I notice a few changes already, like something called "queue" appears
in the Group buffer.  Also there is a dot to the left of each piece of
mail in the summary buffer.  These types of things probably are neat
new features, but I'm not sure what they mean.  I guess I have some
reading to do.

Gnus 5.8 also has it -- the Agent.  You can use it for offline
reading.

It means they are new, unseen.  They have arrived in the current Gnus
session.  (As opposed to those from previous sessions which you
haven't read yet, or hit M-u on.)

Maybe investigate the GNUS-NEWS file.

FWIK, latest released Gnus is quite stable or simply stable. In my
case, I used to use a daily CVS checkout version of Gnus w/o problems.

So I think you can safely switch to the latest stable version. In my
case, I recommend people to migrate to it even for a massive daily use.

Did you read the Changelog ? All has been painfully summed there by

I'm "happily" using 5.10.2 now and it is working very nicely, and even
seems to run a bit faster for me.

I was directed to the GNUS-NEWS file and read about the new features
listed there.

Gnus is an awesome program, and I'd like to congratulate and say
thanks to everyone who has had a hand at making it happen,
