Not sure about this. First, I can somehow use the CD (there still are
similar error messages, but finally there is a prompt using which you
can select to install the system from the CD) on another computer.
Second, I tried to read the CD using linux 'dd' command
dd </dev/hdc >/dev/null
and it finished OK twice... (i.e. reading went OK)

If I can tell it's AOC LM720A, why?

Thanks

Hello!

> looks like CD read errors..

This is not CD read errors.

"bios 0: drive 0x80: 80.026,361,856 bytes, type 3" - drive 0x80 is the
hard drive, isn't it?
"biosdiskcall: int 13 op 0x42 drive 0x80 failed, ah error 0x80"
"sectread: bios failed to read 512 @ sector 0 of 0x80" - an error with
reading of the first sector of the drive 0x80

if you can just use the 9load at
http://ftp.quanstro.net/other/9load
try that, otherwise, try the cd image at
http://ftp.quanstro.net/other/9atom.iso.bz2

Thanks, Erik!

At least I have found the iso image
ftp://ftp.quanstro.net/other/plan9.iso.bz2 works quite correctly (even with
venti!).

I see.
Another point I'd like to say is that the installer doesn't set
memory parameters for venti, such as mem, bcmem...etc,
which caused very huge use of memory in my case.

Actually, how much memory do I have to have to be able to run venti?
And why so much?

Thanks!

it was a write error. it's likely that there just wasn't
enough memory on a 128mb machine for venti.

Now it seems that as long as I don't try to back up fossil with venti
(i.e. I choose just fossil and not fossil+venti in the installation
process), I can use the 9atom CD.

Any attempt to use venti too resulted in a failure sooner or later, as
was depicted in my posts. No hint why...

But at least I have some plan 9 running now...

I tried a few things but still no victory.

Btw. Before installation I had to manually 'randomize' my disk
otherwise the installation program would claim there are some tasks
already done (e.g. when 1st trying to use only fossil and then
restarting the installation and wanting venti as well, it was somehow
satisfied with the previous partition division, though there was not
arenas...).

Anyway, I could install the system and boot, but after a short time
(say 20 s) I get a lot of messages and the system freezes. I am
sending a picture depicting this.
I really don't understand what's wrong...

Is it ok to use an old installation (which, if I remember, worked for
me) disk and then simply run pull?
Do I get the same system then as with the new installation disk?

Thanks
Ruda

Hmm,
my disk is not a SATA one (so then I believe AHCI is out of consideration)

I had this error when I accidentally turned on IDE mode, instead of
AHCI mode in the BIOS of my Supermicro X7SLA-H.

i'd guess the vlong divide-by-zero is caused by a
sector size of 0 somewhere in the kernel. but
that's a wild guess. hard to grep for that easily.
try unplugging your cdrom.

boot the cd. use it to edit your plan9.ini.
set "*nodumpstack=0". set "*idemaxio=64".
you might also consider either turning on ahci
mode in bios, or setting "*sdXXdma=on".
where XX is your drive letter.

Ok.
So those errors are also only warnings? (there were two types of
messages, one starting with 'warning', other with 'error')

Anyway, after running 'copydist' for the first time the installation
program promted, as I said, 'copydist' again. I hit enter, then after
it has finished (it actually as if tries to do the same as it did for
the first time; producing the same or at least very similar messages)
it offers to configure the boot loader, then finish. After reboot I
saw what is attached as a picture. :(
When I rebooted again, it didn't stop, spat a lot other error messages
and now I am getting trillion messages as depicted in the second
picture...
Endless today :)

Any suggestion now?

Thanks for help!

this is my fault. fortuantely these messages should be
harmless.

the problem is that i put some impossible permissions on the cd.
and replica is warning that it can't replicate these permissions.

let me know if things really don't work.

Hello,

I tried 9atom and got much further, but again hit something...
Everything goes well until about 50 % in the 'copydist' installation
task. Then I start getting messages caught in the attached pictures...
Finally I get the prompt saying 'Task to do [copydist]:'
Can anybody tell what's going on now?

Thanks

That's because the new 9load is broken in some way for a large class of
hardware (it was for me too, and older ISOs worked just fine). Erik's 9atom
iso seems to have the problem fixed, and no one has merged the changes back
yet for one reason or another that I've not come to understand.

looks like biosload (or bios) is screwing up and making further
drive detection impossible. if you aren't booting from
usb, you could try 9atom. (ftp://ftp.quanstro.net/other/9atom.iso.bz2)

Hello!

I have the same problem on my IBM ThinkPad T42 with ISO images at least
since 20 Feb 2010.
But after some waiting, the installation menu appears.
After the installation Plan9 starts without the errors with sectors
reading.

Actually, in my installation rio can't start due an error printed by
aux/vga: '"type radeon" is wrong command' or something like this (can't
say exactly for now).

With "Boot Plan from this CD" rio doesn't work with the same error.
But with "Install Plan9 from this CD" rio works quite well.

All these problems didn't have a place in the january.

Hello,

the day before yesterday I downloaded an iso image of Plan 9 and tried
to install it. Something went wrong, no idea what...
Can you help?
I've attached two photos of my screen.

When I try about 2-year-old plan 9 CD, this doesn't happen...

Thanks
Ruda

Is your error messages indicate (1)cannot connected to venti server
or (2)write error to some area in arenas?
