How many 9fans would consider a (totally informal)
get-together in London sometime?

Since I'm now getting divorced, and thus more autonomous,
I don't mind doing the arranging, finding venues, spare beds etc.

I was thinking about, maybe a Saturday,
so people could get to London easily.
The idea would be to find some nice place where we can sit
around talking, eating and drinking all day
(the obvious venue would be a decent pub).

I'm sure Boyd and I can arrange some fun entertainment
for the evening too.

Any takers? Alternative ideas???

Cheers,
	Dave.

P.S. Please tell any 9fans who aren't on the list!
P.P.S. Attendance qualifications are one of:
a) less than 3 degrees of separation from Boyd or Cmdr. Pike.
b) a bullet wound.

Also, in case the London 9con concept takes off ...

In a possibly vain attempt to make the world a better place,
could I plead with the more fortunate members of our fraternity
to help out their poverty stricken fraters with transport, beds etc.

TIA,
	Dave.

Well in London, somewhere serving Fullers would be appropriate. I seem to
recall appreciating HSB (or was it ESB, or maybe both :-).

oh, it's not that bad! The BOF last june was great fun. We had a lot of
good people and I enjoyed the discussion quite a bit; meeting some of the
Plan 9 principals was a real highlight for me, along of course with the
Rocket Dudes. The Rocket Dudes were just great.

Two suggestions:

1. Summer USENIX Plan9 BOF
2. A 9fans event concurrent with a Gun Show and Swap Meet somewhere
in the U.S.

the direction you are going (divorce, bullet wounds, Boyd, etc.) 2 might
be more appropriate.

Does it have to be an old one?

I just checked BA; I can get round trip from Seattle for
about 220-240 USD; has to be in late February or in March.
I'd be game.

Also, FYI, there is a USENIX VM '04 in May in San Jose.

I prefer skiing skating is something I just started learning because

how many 9fans are there in western canada? going to edmonton for a
quick beer in a 9pub isn't a problem, but to go to BC may need a bit
of preparation :)

You're in Seattle, Lyndon is in Vancouver, BC, I'm halfway in between.

Maybe there are enough of us to gather regionally?

I can rent a car and drive 21 hours to vancouver -- one of the most
beautiful drives through the mountains, bar the Banff-Jasper one --
for a weekend. I'm still at the age when this is considered fun :)

best for me is the summer...

Apparently I can't read very well. It is actually $240 for one way
but must be purchased for a round trip. The return is a bit more
expensive. The cheapest BA round trip for that weekend is
approx. $600 (24th to 30th); I would still go if it is a large gathering.

P.S.
Vancouver or Victoria would be great spots too.
If there is an ice rink, we might get to see Andrey's
ice-skating/comedy act. ☺

Halfway in between is about Whidbey Island latitude. Right?

21 hours from Vancouver? I guess you're planning on some road closures.
We made it here from Edmonton in 11 hours, and that was in a Budget 16

Nothing out of Seattle on Virgin; American goes via OHR or DFW
for almost the same price. Not worth the hassle.

wow. edm<->van is ~1250 kms, so you averaged over 110km/hr over
11 hours. did you have a big box of tim horton's coupons or did

A suggestion:
why don't people tell me when they _can_ attend lon9con,
rather than when they _can't_?

If we arbitrarily say sometime between say, start of March,
(to allow time for people to get organised),
and end of June, to get a cutoff date.

May I suggest that we also forget any of the following dates:
8th May, because of Usenix VM,
	27th March because of PyCon
	5th June because of EuroPython.

If anyone has any other dates that _generally_ seem a Bad Idea,
please email me!

I've attached a list of dates of possible Saturdays
with the above constraints.
If everyone who wants to come emails me back the attachment
after deleting the Saturdays that they _can't_ attend
(i.e. I want lists of when you _can_ come)
preserving the format so I can count them easily.

Send it to _me_ (davel@anvil.com) with a subject of
"lon9con possible dates".

I will then chose randomly among the most popular date(s).

Cheers,
	Dave.

Definitely!
Also, how about an ongoing competition to find
the coolest Glenda item brought to a 9con?

(Eventually I intend to have a Glenda-shaped desktop box,
but that's a long way off.)

Friday night:
Meet and greet, sort out beds, do some drinking and stuff.
Saturday all day:
Sit around in the Designated Pub, shooting the breeze,
	drinking, eating and stuff.
Maybe have a whiteboard there for scribbling stuff?
Saturday night:
Boyd and Dave Present: A Serious Night Out.
Sunday:
Find a Big Greasy Breakfast and Eat It.
Relax, sit around and nurse hangovers in Designated Pub.
	Wander off home as required.

Any additions or modifications proposed?

Interested people could do a movie on Friday or Saturday.

Maybe its time for a "social" page in the plan9 wiki?

Hmmm, 48hours in aircraft and $1800 for a round trip to London... nah, I

short haul in a herc is a hoot. I've done Melbourne->Launceston and apart
from the toilet, the sideways seating and general interior style was most
l33t. makes you wonder why the crew on 747s *dont* do a patrol with a torch to
check ducting and cable runs during flight...

Bellingham, actually.

About halfway given the time to cross the border these days....

Say, Saturday March 27th?

In 1968 I flew with my wife and baby daughter on an Iranian Air Force C-130
from Lajes Field in the Azores to Gander Air Force Base in Newfoundland.

I had committed the sin of disregarding US Air Force regulations on
accompaniment by dependents (hey, my wife and daughter can travel where
they please, they're not GIs like me...) and so not only did they keep us
off USAF flights but they told Canadian and British aircrews that they
(USAF) wouldn't service their planes if they took us. The Iranian AF used
Portuguese ground services, so it was no problem for them. They were
wonderfully hospitable to us outcasts.

If I make it to one of the 9cons I'll tell you the story of diplomatic
maneuverings to get GI families deported from the Azores. (This was during
Vietnam; the USAF had never before dealt with virtual conscripts like us,
who just wouldn't get with the program.)

It actually wasn't that bad. The hard part was turning back twice because
of arctic storms at our destination before finally finishing the flight. It
was December 23 and the Iranians were trying to figure out what was our big
rush to get home when one of them exclaimed, "Oh yes, Christmas!"

A magnificent 5 (five) responses so far (including me!).

If people wouldn't mind spending the weekend consulting diaries etc.
so I can get some serious ideas of numbers, I'd be grateful.

I know at least one person expressed an interest but hasn't
responded yet ...

Cheers,
	Dave.

Sorry, 8!

What does that make us: the Great Eight?

Also, if people want to start thinking about their sleeping
requirements, and any kind of "entertainment" (in the widest sense)
that they'd like to participate in,
please feel free to email me and I'll collate requirements.

Cheers,
	Dave.

After a night out with me and Boyd, you'll sleep in whatever
position you collapse into:-).

You don't like curry?

You mean you'll eat English food for anyone else?:-).

Don't worry, Gorka: I haven't accidentally copied a private
mail to a list for a while: so it's obviously your turn:-).

Cheers,
	Dave.

There's also Le Montmartre in Essex Road:
excellent Belgian/French menu,
moules, frites and beer: who needs anything else?

Cheers,

P.S. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to book somewhere
good and cheap for the Saturday night: if enough people are agreeable.

Yes, I know that some people's nutritional needs are completely
met by ESB, but not everyones:-).

no Gorka, you go ahead and insult us as much as you like.

I've been to costa-del-sol with it's egg and chips and sheperd's pie 'English cuisine'.

It's no surprise the rest of Europe would have such a low opinion of us after meeting our tourists.

Especially if the Euro's had also visited London!

btw. my votes are :
Mar 20
Mar 13
Apr 17

Though my only real non-attendance date is
Apr 4th (my significant ex's birthday)

(I seem to have missed the one explaining the voting procedure, will this do?)

I can probably sort my own accommodation in London.

Mmm. Sorry for that. I wasn't intending to insult you English
people. I don't have a bad opinion of English people. I even have
some close English friends. I lived (studied) in Hereford with an
English family 4 summers and I liked it. I just could't cope the food
and I am normaly open to foreign foods. I don't just stop eating
something because it is raw (as in japanese food) or looks bad (like
eating fried blood), but English food I just can't do.

In Costa del Sol you can have lots of good food fish, good meat, you have very good olive oil for the
locally produced fresh vegetables, I can't even start.

You don't like Black Pudding? :-) Actually I didn't like the stuff before
I hit 30, I guess it may be something to do with the tastes changing as
one ages, mind my Brother alays liked the stuff as a kid.

Anyway, what's wrong with Blood Sausage? There are other cultures that
have the same - notably certain parts of Italy.

The real problem with Black Pudding is the variable quality, due to not
many people consuming it, and changes in (EU) rules governing it's
production. It's almost impossible to get decent Black Pudding in the
south of the county. Try it from Lancashire and futher north.

I would agree English food is bad. But, all is
not lost...
1. The supermarkets carry a lot better ethnic
selection than in the USofA (how about some good
pakora or the thai spinach soup at Sainsbury's).
2. The sight kebab wagon when beer is sloshing in your
belly is heaven sent. (don't try their burgers).
3. I have had moderate success with shepards pie,
but a lot of the potato stuff might be funny.
4. In London do not waste money in restaurants
or Chinatown. Pret-a-manger is the best value for
your money if you can find one.

if you can *find* one? they're like every other block!
it's like Starbucks in NYC (or most any other
american city). and while i agree they're a good value
for your money, better than Chinatown? not so sure.

There is loads of great food, both English and non-English,
available in England:
it's just hard to find in London 'cos it's full of tourists.

Not all English food is bad: I'm English, I cook,
and in the opinions of those who've sampled it, I cook well. q.e.d.
(Also, no matter what the ignorant say.
decent fish and chips is still a world beater.)

People who eat the congealed blood of any animal deserve their fate.

BTW: No-one's even mentioned Scottish, Irish or Welsh cuisine.
(Who invented smoked salmon, no matter what the Canadians think?)

Now can everyone please:
1) Shut the fuck up about English food.
2) If you're going to 9conlon, tell me suitable dates
3) Go back to talking about IRQs or USBs or some other interesting
   TLA.

Cheers,
	Dave.

I'm not sure what the current front-runners are, since the dates have got
obscured in the, er, "other", discussions. But if I could put in my
vote for any of the middle weekends in May (i.e. 8th, 15th, 22th), since
that would make it feasible for me. Other dates are not, since I'm
'some distance' away :-).
